Meet ‘Rockstar’ Ranbir’s Firangi Item

Barbara Mori couldn’t ignite the silver screen with ‘Kites’ even though after having an actor like Hrithik who has the looks of a Greek God...

But the makers of ‘Rockstar’ are damn confident that the tall and the lovely Nargis Fakhri will definitely fit the bill and set the screen on fire with our Bollywood prince charming Ranbir Kapoor in his upcoming movie ‘Rockstar’.

The half Czech and half Pakistani model will be seen in Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Rockstar’ and both Ranbir and Nargis are currently shooting in Prague.

The tall and the beautiful Nargis will be playing the role of a dancer. The 5’9” model has previously sizzled in the 2009 Kingfisher calendar.

Priyanka sets out to make a difference

The beauty is truly going good… Besides giving good work on screens, Priyanka Chopra is making good impressions on the social side as well.

The Desi Gal is reported to have been crowned as UNICEF's National Ambassador. The actress has been chosen as the new face to promote child and adolescence rights. A press conference was in New Delhi on Tuesday where an agreement between the actor and UNICEF was signed.

Quoted Priyanka at the meet, "I am elated to lend voice to an issue I strongly believe in. I have visited slums and traveled in the heart of villages to understand the problems of child education, malnutrition during my association with the UNICEF in past two years.”

The charming actress later even added, “I hope that by lending my voice, I can make a difference to the lives of India's young.”

With this Priyanka has entered the list of celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan and Sharmila Tagore, who are also associated with UNICEF, for the same cause.

Kareena ahead in ad race

Wherever she goes she makes heads turn, making her the most preferred face on screens… So this buzz doesn’t come as a surprise….

According to a report by AdEx India, a division of TAM Media Research, hottie Kareena Kapoor is the top woman endorser of the year. The reports say that the actress had a 45 percent share of celebrity endorsements on television during 2010.

Following this, quotes a source, "Kareena has reached phenomenal heights. She had the maximum ad volumes of celebrity endorsement (FMCG brands) on TV during 2009 as well."

Airtel, Kurkure, Vivel, Sony Vaio, Gitanjal – being a face for different brands, Bebo has indeed conquered the way into people’s homes and hearts, besides featuring in films….

Deepika in India’s Got Talent

Deepika Padukone
Deepika Padukone’s forthcoming film with Neil Nitin Mukesh, Lafangey Parindey, has joined hand with Colors reality show India’s Got Talent Khoj 2 and has a sequence wherein Deepika who plays a blind girl Pinky Palkar, is shown to be participating in India’s Got Talent.

She is shown to be a fabulous dancer of skates. Her ambition is only one - to rise above all the ‘losers’ living in her locality and carve a niche for herself, which she will try to do through the show. She will be seen participating in India’s Got Talent in the film, to show the others that she can win in life.

Deepika actually went on the sets of the show when the Mumbai auditions were on. Says Deepika, “I salute the spirit of India’s Got Talent and the dream of each and every participant who wants to carve a niche by showcasing his or her talent to the world. This August is going to be a month of celebrating talent; while viewers will enjoy some exciting acts on the show, I am confident that they will also cheer for Pinky Palkar when Lafangey Parindey hits the big screen.” Incidentally, Deepika will be appearing on the show that launched recently, but the dates are yet to be worked out.

Ketki, Rasik Dave’s special appearance in Bidaai

Ketki and Rasik Dave are all set to make cameo appearances in Bidaai. One of the sequences will have the duo advising Ragini (Parul Chauhan) and Anmol (Apurva Agnihotri) the value of love and romance in life when they bump into each other in a restaurant. The couple will be giving love tips to Ragini and Anmol as they are not getting close to each other despite being married. Incidentally, Bidaai so far has had at least 30 cameo appearances since it started. Says producer Rajan Shahi, “Bidaai has a history of bringing in relevant cameos. People love to see different faces in a TV show. I have worked with Ketki in Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin, which I used to direct. She and her husband were the first and last choice for this special cameo.”

Laali’s new look

Finally Laali’s bid adieu to poverty and got herself a rich new avatar. Ratan Rajput, who plays Laali in Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo has a transformation. From Laali she has turned into Shyamli, the thakurain. The cotton sarees and glass bangles have been replaced with the rich, ornate silk sarees further accentuated with gold jewellery. Thanks to the seven-year leap and her memory loss, Laali at least for sometime can enjoy the riches with her new husband (Manav Gohil) and the two kids that she inherits. Says Ratan, “Because of the new look the whole get-up is elaborate and make-up takes a lot of time, but I am enjoying it.” So are the viewers, Laali.

Khel Khel Mein on Doordarshan

Doordarshan has launched a sports-based reality show as a prelude to the 19th Commonwealth Games. The aim of the show is to create awareness of the various games that will be played at the international competition. Hosted by Milind Soman and Shraddha, this show is set to introduce the thirteen sports that will be played at the Commonwealth Games followed with a reality style competition.

Says producer Kirti Shrivastav, “Doordarshan commissioned the show and I had an interesting idea that would create awareness about the sports in an entertaining way. There are three aspects to the show. While studio host Milind introduces the sport, Pawan Shankar is the coach and mentor for the games that will be played by the contestants on the show and Shraddha alternates between the studio and the stadium in Pune where the game is played.” What’s more, each week they have a celebrity guest like P.T. Usha, Dhanraj Pillai and Abhinav Bindra who talk about their sport.

Sangini at 10, Karol Bagh shifted to 7 pm

The Delhi-based serial 12/24 Karol Bagh is all set to be shifted to a new time slot from August 16. The show, which is currently being aired at 10 pm, will be moved to the 7 pm slot. Zee is bringing on a new serial Sanjog Se Bani Sangini, which has been in the news for Binny Sharma, a former Dance India Dance participant being roped in for the lead role opposite Eijaz Khan. Since its launch, Karol Bagh has been maintaining a steady TRP of 2.5-3. Says producer Sudhir Sharma, “The channel wanted to increase programming hours and since Karol Bagh is a North-based show, the programming team thought it is a good idea to shift to a early time slot. We also have strong vieweship abroad. The new timing will surely help in reaching out to a bigger audience.”

Emotional Atyachar 2 back with new host

When he stepped out of the Bigg Boss house in December last year after spoiling the party for winner Vindu Dara Singh, he emphatically told Screen that he was here to stay. Now, fresh from his stint as host of child reality show Chak Dhoom Dhoom, Pravesh Rana, the lad from Meerut has been selected to host the second season of UTV Bindaas’ flagship reality show Emotional Atyachar.

“Emotional Atyachar was a path-breaking show and it was the most talked-about show when it was aired during its first season. The channel approached me while I was hosting Chak Dhoom Dhoom and I immediately agreed to it as its different from the usual fare on TV,” Rana said. In the new season, the show will move out of Mumbai and Pune. “We will travel across the country this time and concentrate on the northern belt,” Nikhil Gandhi, Business Head, UTV Bindaas, said. Apart from this, the show will also look at testing people from co-workers to people outside of relationships as well, apart from the loyalty tests it conducts in each episode.

Explaining his brief on the show, Rana said, “My role is to make the participant comfortable as there are a lot of negative things going on in people’s minds when a loyalty test is being conducted. Also, since the show has contestants from North, the emotional quotient of the people is higher and you need to be very cautious and sensitive when dealing with them.”

Emotional Atyachar 2 kicked off on August 1 and was unveiled by Ajay Devgn and Emraan Hashmi as part of the promotional activities for their latest movie Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai. Gandhi said that the number of celebrities in the new season will be significantly higher than the first season and that shooting had already begun. Confirming the same, Rana, who claimed to be “affected” by the experience said, “We’ve finished shooting two episodes. They were quite intense.”

Mano Ya Na Mano returns

Remember Mano Ya Na Mano 2, the series on supernatural phenomenon culled from real life and hosted by Irrfan Khan? The series is all set to make a comeback on Star One with a set of new stories and a new anchor in the form of Mishal Raheja. Brace yourself to see a young girl Rashida Khatoon from North-East India shedding tears of blood and a man who has not eaten for 70 years and is still alive. Then there’s this ritual followed in a village in Tamil Nadu where a couple getting married has to perform thoppukaranam - sit ups, holding their ears 10,000 times. The bride and groom have to walk around the temple tank with grass in their mouth and burning torches in their hands.

If these kind of stories intrigue you, then tune into the channel from mid-August.

The final countdown

The Dance India Dance Little Masters has got its final four contestants who will fight for the title on August 7. Jeetumoni, Vaishnavi Patil, Manoj and Atul are the finalists who are practicing very hard and making sure they put up a good show, Jeetumoni and Vaishnavi are super-excited rather than nervous to be a part of the finals. “We have been rehearsing a lot for the finale. There are a lot of stunts in the group performance and I really enjoy the time we all spend together while rehearsing,” says Vaishnavi, the girl from Pune. Though she doesn’t know the song she will be dancing to in the finals, she is all geared up for the finale. “If I win, I will give all the prize money and gifts to my mom and dad. I will thank my aunty and uncle who have been there for me throughout.” Jeetumoni, the most loved contestant on the show, is hoping he wins the crown along with millions of hearts. “Right now, preparations are on in full swing and everyone is putting their best foot forward. I look up to Dharmesh-sir and hope to fulfil his wish of seeing me win. If at all I win I shall throw a party and treat everyone.”

CELEB WATCH

Riddhi Dogra

My favourite serial is Friends. As cliched as that might be, I can see it over and over again. And yes, I do know the dialogues by heart. So You Think You Can Dance is another top favourite. Besides these two show, I am mostly glued to movie channels like HBO and UTV World Movies. I liked watching Anthony Bordain’s No Reservations and the series on Shah Rukh Khan on Travel and Living.

Playing God

Creating Synthetic Life

Discovery Science, Tuesday, 8 pm

Until this year, the creation of life in a lab seemed limited to the realms of weird fiction written by the likes of HP Lovecraft and Mary Shelley. Re-animating corpses or creating an entirely new being from cadaver parts excavated from a graveyard a la Dr Frankenstein — these imaginings provided ample scope for horrified debates about the implication of man playing God. It’s a relief then, when the discussion moves away from fantastic fictional realms and gets down to nitty-gritties of DNA and molecules.

In May this year, a group of American geneticists made waves with the news that they had finally created life in a petri dish. Humans had finally achieved what had once seemed impossible—playing God. Creating Synthetic Life documents this long, expensive and at times frustrating journey. The research team, headed by Dr J Craig Venter, provides a step-by-step explanation of how it managed create synthetic life in the lab. And as they stress again and again, it was no easy feat.

The prominent members of the research team explain the various stages of the project. Venter, whose brainchild the project is, holds the whole documentary together, while his associates Hamilton Smith, Clyde Hutchinson, John Glass and Dan Gibson make appearances to explain their roles. The enthusiasm with which they all narrate their exciting journey together is infectious-despite the white lab coats and grizzled beards, they seem almost like school boys discovering the infinite possibilities of a chemistry lab set.

The wealth of detail and passion poured into the making of this documentary is commendable. You may not know, or care, about Mycoplasma mycoides, but by the end of the show, you’ll know its significance to the history of bio-sciences. It’s officially the first living organism to be recreated in a lab and that is a mighty big step for humankind.

Dr Venter and his associates take great pains to repeat over and over again that they realise what their discovery can mean in the wrong hands. All the possibilities-accidental leakage, deliberate creation of harmful bacteria and mutations are mentioned. We’re informed that the American government keeps a close watch over what findings are published in scientific journals and the team also consults a bio-ethicist to discuss the implications of its projects, but the viewer rarely gets a sense of how significant the debate is. A simple Google search will show what a controversial figure Venter is and how his obsession with creating synthetic life has split the scientific world into two camps. However, while watching the documentary, the viewer fails to get a sense of it.

Verdict:

Venter’s project was inadequately debated in the Indian media, so this is a good opportunity for viewers to know more about this momentous development in human history.

Jolie spurs Russian patriotism at Salt Moscow show

Jolie
Angelina Jolie whipped up Soviet-era nostalgia and patriotism for Mother Russia at the Moscow premiere of her spy thriller Salt. Clad in a floor-length Versace gown she described as Russian Red, Jolie blew kisses to thousands of fans who came to watch her play a suspected Russian double agent in the blockbuster, which opened at No. 2 in the U.S. at $36.5 million.

“I think this film is positive for modern Russia,” a broadly smiling Jolie told Reuters television at her first ever premiere in Moscow.

“As much as there are bad guys that are Russian, there are also heroes that are Russian in this film,” she said as her diamond stud earrings sparkled in the sunshine of Moscow’s record-setting heatwave. The film, which evokes Cold War suspicions, enjoyed a stroke of luck with its timing, coming shortly after 10 arrested Russian spies in the United States were swapped for four imprisoned Russians suspected of working for the West.

Jolie has previously called the connection “bizarre,” but declined to comment on press rumours that she had invited glamorous redhead spy Anna Chapman to the premiere. Reviews for Salt have been mixed in the United States, but commentators have said distributor Columbia Pictures is banking on the film striking a chord with Russian audiences.

“It really makes me happy that we have returned to the theme of Russian spies in Hollywood films,” 23-year-old architect Alexander said after watching the film.

During the premiere, the audience erupted into applause when Jolie’s eponymous character, CIA analyst Evelyn Salt, revealed her Russian identity on the big screen.

The packed cinema also jubilantly howled when Jolie said Good evening in Russian ahead of unveiling the film. But her hours of Russian training, which she described as an “aggressive but soft and seductive” language, will be lost on Russian audiences as it was entirely dubbed for general release.

Speculations are rife about how the next picture will find its financing and if it will slow the franchise’s momentum

Jamesbond

The James Bond 007: Blood Stone video game event in London this month had all the class and splash one would expect from the world’s most elegant spy. Guests sipped Champagne in the historic former church venue One Marylebone and inspected pieces of Bond memorabilia including Oddjob’s hat from Goldfinger and Jaws famous teeth. The event even featured a video game Bond girl in a stunning black evening dress, the Brit songstress Joss Stone who belts out the game’s theme song. However impressive the Activision launch, big questions about the historic franchise loomed. Longtime Bond producer Michael G. Wilson touched on these unspoken questions from the podium. “I wish we were launching a movie,” he quipped, bringing laughter from the audience.

It was a rare public comment and an even rarer moment of mirth in the drawn-out James Bond-MGM saga, which has left the faithful feeling shaken. In April, Wilson and his half sister and fellow Bond producer, Barbara Broccoli, announced that development of the next 007 feature, known as Bond 23, was suspended “indefinitely.” The baddie who finally managed to knock Bond out of commission? Financial woes at MGM, which owns rights to Bond but is saddled with a crushing $4 billion in debt. Although no one doubts that Bond will be back, questions remain about where the next picture will find its financing and whether the open-ended delay will slow the momentum the franchise had rediscovered on the rugged shoulders of Daniel Craig.

The topic fascinates the legions of Bond fans as well as industry insiders. “It’s a business problem that will be solved, and then Bond will be back,” said director Phillip Noyce, whose Bond-esque thriller Salt has just begun its worldwide campaign. “There’s still a lot of hunger out there for the Bond story.” But Bond appears to be left out in the cold as MGM debtholders extended a deadline to get the studio’s financial house in order to September 15. Broccoli and Wilson declined comment but are said to be deeply concerned about the effect of an indefinite delay.

“They’re completely panicked that if they go five, six years without a Bond movie, it’ll be over,” a former MGM insider said. “They don’t want to kill the golden goose.”

According to the source, Broccoli is hoping for a sale to Time Warner. But TW’s $1.5 billion bid for the studio in May, though the highest fielded, is well below what MGM expected. And potential companies still in the hunt — Spyglass Entertainment, Summit Entertainment and Lionsgate — apparently are not on the scale that would satisfy the Bond producers.

“Bond’s the entire yearly production budget for Lionsgate, and you’ve got (hostile suitor) Carl Icahn saying they’re spending too much money,” the former MGM insider said. “These (prospective MGM buyers) freak them out. (But) all they can do is work behind the scenes to get what they want.” Broccoli and Wilson also continue to push for Sony Pictures to be involved. The studio was behind the production, marketing and distribution of 2008’s Quantum Of Solace. Although a delay might be worrisome, the nearly 50-year-old movie franchise not only has kept its mojo through a steady stream of reinventions but also has rebounded despite similar previous pauses.

Bruce Feirstein, a frequent 007 screenwriter who recently completed the complex video story behind Blood Stone, recalls that there was a six-year wait before switching Bonds from Timothy Dalton to Pierce Brosnan for 1995’s Golden Eye, a film whose screenplay he worked on. The film went on to gross $352 million worldwide. “The franchise never lost its luster during that period,” Feirstein noted.

Golden Eye casting director Pam Dixon recalled excitedly telling the film’s director, Martin Campbell, that her young son didn’t know who Bond was. To her, that meant a chance to give the franchise a real reboot. “The long break was a plus in that instance,” she says.

Bond 23 was moving forward on the heels of more than $1 billion in worldwide grosses from Craig’s 2006 debut Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace.

Craig was ready to roll into action again with Bond 23, and American Beauty director Sam Mendes was in discussions to take the helm. The project was due out next year. Craig has been the good soldier during the delay, standing behind his April statement in which he said he was looking “forward to production resuming as quickly as possible.” As 007 sits on the sidelines, Bond hardly is the only game in town. The spy marketplace is filled with competing secret agents crowding multiplexes, and those are in competition with the slew of comic book characters seeking a big slice of Bond’s audience.

Tellingly, GoldenEye veterans Dixon and Campbell teamed on the upcoming DC Comics creation Green Lantern .Right now, comic book franchises are so popular,” Dixon says. “Who knows where we are going to be when we see the next Bond? These are very uncertain times.” Said Feirstein: “I’m not worried about 007. There’s a line at the end of every movie which we used in the video game: It’s that James Bond will return. ... It’s been true for 50 years. A hiccup like what’s going on at MGM is not going to change that.”
