KBC 4 on Bachchan's birthday

amitabhbachchan2.jpg

By Hindustan Times

Mumbai, July 29 -- Preparations are on in full swing for the fourth season of Kaun Banega Crorepati. Buzz is that the show will flag off on Sony on October 11, host-actor Amitabh Bachchan's 68th birthday. Our source from the channel confirms the news, "That's the plan, but there could be a last-minute change. It's a programming and marketing decision that will be taken in due course of time."

Sony's business head and executive vice-president, Ajit Thakur, asserts that the show will definitely come on in October, but the date hasn't been locked yet. "Yes, we are toying with the idea of starting it on Mr Bachchan's birthday, let's see what happens. Right now we are focussed on sifting out entries. The phone lines open on Monday, August 2," says Thakur.

Bachchan has got the channel to incorporate the new rupaiyya symbol in the show's logo, replacing 'Rs' that was used in the earlier seasons. "He proposed it a week ago during one of our meetings and we readily incorporated it in our campaign designs. It enhances the logo," asserts Thakur.

Logo so good

Bachchan on his Twitter blog has mentioned: "Note the rupee symbol incorporated in the design. My suggestion! Yeah! Feeling good. Insisted to Sony to incorporate the new rupee symbol in the KBC logo. They did. Looking so cool!" The superstar has started mock rehearsals for the show in his bungalow Jalsa in Juhu. "The first rehearsal was two weeks ago on a mock set at Mr Bachchan's bungalow," informs Thakur. "The actual set is being erected at Goregaon's Film City."

Shah Rukh's olive branch - birthday wishes for Uddhav Thackeray

shahrukhglasses.jpg

Mumbai, July 27 (IANS) Of all the greetings that Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray received on his 50th birthday Tuesday, one stood out - "best compliments" from none other than Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan who had been targeted by the party this year.

The birthday wishes were conveyed not through a traditional greeting card, but in a half-page advertisement released in Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamna. It said, "With Best Compliments From...Red Chillies Entertainment", the film company owned by Shah Rukh.

Coming as it did just a few months after the Sena had launched an all-out campaign against the superstar, the impact of the ad (Page 20, left hand side) was not lost on either readers or Uddhav.

"I am accepting best wishes from everybody," is all that Uddhav chose to say when asked about the ad this afternoon.

The olive branch extended by Shah Rukh - in the form of the advertisement - comes nearly six months after the Sena had launched an all-out campaign against the superstar following the release of his blockbuster, "My Name Is Khan", in February this year. The party was angry with him for speaking in favour of Pakistani cricketers for the Indian Premier League.

The issue had pitted the state government and the Shiv Sena against each other in a controversy that raged for nearly 10 days and prompted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to make a visit to Mumbai Feb 5 and thumb the saffron party in its bastion.

A nostalgic Lara walks ramp for Rina Dhaka

laradutta7.jpg

New Delhi, July 25 (IANS) Model-turned actress Lara Dutta says it was a nostalgic feeling when she walked the ramp for designer Rina Dhaka at the ongoing Pearls Infrastructure Delhi Couture Week.

"I had walked the ramp for Rina in 1998, it was then I had started modelling. So after that I managed to walk for her this time and it was very nostalgic indeed," Lara told reporters here after the show Sunday.

"I am glad to be here for the first couture week and thanks a ton Delhi people for having me here in the capital," she added.

This former Miss Universe, who is now more active in movies, says walking down the ramp is now a lot more tougher than compared to her modelling days. Contrary to her claim, dressed in a black crystallised chic blouse and train lehenga, the actress flaunted her perfect figure and walked down the ramp with oodles of confidence.

"Walking the ramp as a celebrity is very tough because that time you are the face of the designer so you have to be very confidant and poised and make sure every move you make is fine. You can't go wrong here so it is a bit tougher, but it is always fun," said Lara.

"Also walking down the ramp in front of a live audience is also fun as you know that there won't be any re-takes," she added.

Inspired by cobwebs, Dhaka's collection had a lot of slim-line silhouettes, interesting saris and corsets paired with lehengas.

A lot of lace, brocade, hand embroidery and various textures were used on the saris and dresses. Also, a lot of cut work and pearl work dominated the range that was in the hues of metallic black, neutral beige and bright reds.

Dia-Zayed: Time to partner u

diamirza2.jpg

By Hindustan Times

New Delhi, July 25 -- I have some khabar on Dia Mirza's movie production business. The actress is launching her own company, and the first film is being helmed by her beau, Sahil Sangha.

According to my jasoos from Juhu, Zayed Khan, her buddy and co-star of a couple of movies, is also involved, as her partner. Both Dia and Zayed will also star in the film.

35 years on, the 'Sholay' fire still burns

sholayposter.jpg

New Delhi, July 24 (IANS) It drew its inspiration from multiple Hollywood movies but went on to become the quintessential Indian film, perfectly balancing drama and tragedy, romance and violence, comedy and action. This Aug 15 it will be 35 years since "Sholay" was released - three decades and more of Gabbar, Jai, Veeru and Basanti still striking a chord.

Sometimes described as an Indian curry western, "Sholay" is still a reference point for Indian cinema and impossible to pin down to any one genre. It was about the undying friendship between Jai and Veeru, the unspoken love of a young widow, the exuberant romance between a garrulous 'tonga walli' and a flamboyant thief, the immensely tragic life of an idealistic police officer and, of course, Gabbar Singh, the dacoit who struck terror.

It worked at many levels, and still does for generations of film-goers who watch the 1975 multi-starrer for the ultimate movie-going experience. For some, it's nostalgia and, for the young cinema buff, "Sholay" is a matter of curiosity.

Director Ramesh Sippy was called a magician for the spell he cast. The film is the ultimate high point for many stars - from the lead stars Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra and Hema Malini to the unknown Amjad Khan who as Gabbar became one of Hindi cinema's best known villains. The cameos by character artists Asrani and Jagdeep were equally important to the success of the film and still remembered.

Even Macmohan, who had barely a dialogue in the film, was "Samba" till the day he died in May this year.

"We had no idea that this will become such a huge film. We conceived an idea and when we started working on the screenplay, gradually it dawned on us that the film has more than two important characters," Javed Akhtar, who co-scripted the cult film with Saleem Khan, told IANS.

"After 35 years, even the minor characters are used in ads, promos, films and sit coms," he said.

Ironically, there were few takers when "Sholay", which translates to fire, released Aug 15, 1975. At three hours and 20 minutes, it was deemed too long. But, in an era where there was no television and no effective visual marketing tools, word of mouth worked. It ran for five years straight at Mumbai's Minerva theatre, for instance.

"No multistarrer worked as 'Sholay' did. It's got everything. It was a complete package. Initially, in the first two weeks, it didn't do well but it picked up from the third week onwards and became an overnight sensation," said trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

"It remains the box office gold standard, a reference point for both the Indian film-going audience and the film industry. For 'Sholay' is not merely a film, it is the ultimate classic," film critic Anupama Chopra wrote in her book "Sholay: The Making of a Classic".

"Even the starring animal, Dhanno the mare, has been immortalised."

Technologically, too, the movie was one of its kind - "Sholay" was India's first 70mm film and also the first stereophonic sound movie.

" 'Sholay' remains the Indian film industry's monument to 70 mm filmmaking," noted film historian Gautam Kaul told IANS.

Produced by G.P. Sippy at a budget of about Rs.3 crore at that time, it was completed by Ramesh Sippy over a period of two-and-a-half years. It was released with as many as 250 prints.

Scriptwriter duo Salim-Javed wrote themselves into posterity, their dialogues being mouthed across the country. They were at their creative best-from scripting action scenes, to flavouring it with romance and comedy-they served the tastiest ever curry for Indian audiences.

Even all these years later, it is still that rare film whose dialogue soundtrack was released along with the music. Who can forget "Kitne aadmi the?", "Jo darr gaya, samjho marr gaya" or "Tumhara naam kya hai, Basanti?"

"This film was also the watermark for film scriptwriters, who until 'Sholay' were not paid so well... film scriptwriting became a better, respected and lucrative profession after 'Sholay'," said Kaul.

Item numbers may be a rage now, but legendary R.D. Burman served up one of India's best with "Mehbooba, mehbooba".

Inspired by Hollywood films like "Once Upon A Time In The West" (1968) and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (1969), "Sholay" still has to its credit a standing record of 60 golden jubilees across India. It was the first film in the history of Indian cinema to celebrate a silver jubilee at over 100 theatres across the country.

The plaudits have never stopped.

In 1999, BBC India declared it as the "film of the millennium". Its run at the Bollywood box office even caught the attention of the Guinness Book of World Records, where it was inducted for its five-year run.

Corporate executive Harshad Jain sums up the "Sholay" magic. "I've seen it 300 times, I won't mind seeing it 100 times more. It was the best part of growing up."

Kathryn Bigelow: 'It's hard to get finance for a female director

kathrynbigelow.jpg

By Hindustan Times

Mumbai, April 7 –

How did it feel to have The Hurt Locker bag six Oscars, two for you personally, for Best Motion Picture and Best Director?

It was the best gift I could have ever imagined and I'm overwhelmed by every response I've received. There's no way to describe it. It was the moment of a lifetime! First woman director to win an Oscar, a BAFTA, a Guild of America Award...

Will your pioneering achievement help the cause of women in Hollywood?

Thanks for all the beautiful words but I just think of myself as a filmmaker and wish that some day this gender difference will not be a part of human beings. If I could motivate young blood to tell good stories, I'd be gratified.

During a recent interview, Mira Nair admitted that Hollywood was still a boy's club. Would you agree?

Not completely, but to an extent, yes. Last year, female directors knocked out hits like The Proposal, Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, It's Complicated and Julie & Julia. And actresses outperformed most of their male counterparts. Still, you can't deny that it's really hard to get finance for a movie directed by a female director because the industry thinks that most of them have risen to power by directing (and often writing) films that appeal only to women, whether or not that's their natural inclination. Of course, that's not true.

Twenty years as a director and just 10 films. Would the number have gone up had you been a man?

Never! Like James (Cameron) I believe in quality and not numbers. He took 12 years to come up with Avatar. For me, the time period was seven years with The Hurt Locker. I turned one of journalist - screenwriter Mark Boal's articles into a TV series - The Inside. That took a fair amount of time. Then, in 2004, two years after K-19, I learnt that he was going off to Baghdad with a bomb squad. That war had been under-reported and I was hopeful he'd come back with some material worthy of a cinematic translation. He did and we started scripting in 2005, raised the money in 2006, shot in 2007, cut it in 2008, and came to the theatres in 2009. What people don't realise is how long a film can take in development.

The Middle East is a male-dominated society though Jordan, where you shot, is definitely more progressive. What was it like for you, a woman, filming there?

It was cheaper to shoot in the Middle East and as an independent filmmaker; budget was a major concern. Jordan is a secular, westernised country as compared to Iraq, and in some of the outer neighbourhoods, we received lots of support and receptivity. We filmed one sequence in a Palestinian refugee camp. As soon as we started, a crowd of young guys gathered, rocks were thrown and a few fights broke out. We filmed through it all. They soon realised that we were just doing the same shot, over and over, and started to applaud at the end of each take.

You filmed with a lot of Iraqi refugees including prisoners of war. What's the plight of women and girl children in these war camps?

I couldn't get access into the Palestinian war camps but they are more or less the same in every country. There is extreme poverty and lack of resources but at least they are out of the war zone. All of our extras were Iraqi actors and two of them had been prisoners of the Americans in Iraq. Ironically, they played prisoners too in my film. That was surreal - and a little uncomfortable - but they laughed and said that they were happy to work. I was overwhelmed that somehow we could help each other.

How much of the script relived Mark Boal's experiences as a journalist covering Baghdad?

I tried to do justice with the first hand familiarity of Mark's dreadful experience there but there were lots of blood scenes in the initial draft that were too violent to show. We finalised the script after 17 drafts.

A lot has been said about Jeremy Renner's 100- pound bomb suit that he had to wear all day in 115 degrees. How did you cope with the blistering heat?

It was really punishing for Jeremy. I was sensitive to his needs and his oxygen levels but there's only so much you can do. In June, the temperature was up to 135 degree Fahrenheit and we felt like we were standing in front of an overheated car with the hood up. The blast of hot air hit you all day, everyday.

There's talk of you doing a Godzilla remake. Will you go the 3D way too?

What Godzilla? I'm not planning anything in 3D as of now.

What about The Miraculous Year and Triple Frontier?

Shhhhhh... Can't say anything on them yet.

Okay, one last question: Will you ever direct a simple, fairytale romance? Incidentally, what is your idea of love?

I would love to direct movies in different genres that would give me a chance to explore my skills. Love is an expression to tell your loved ones how you feel about him or her. It's a universal experience yet every individual occurrence while bound by a common thread, is absolutely unique. Love is what love is.To everyone, it expresses itself differently.

English films with English subtitles at some theatres

inceptionposter.jpg

By Hindustan Times

Mumbai, July 22 -- The dispute over the role of subtitles in English movies is soon to be resolved. While some film distributors think they're a distraction, others who have discovered they're a handy tool will release prints both with and without them and let the audience decide.

Sony Pictures hasn't run subtitles with their films, and don't plan to for their upcoming release, Salt, either. "Subtitles make sense for action movies since the audience might not understand dialogues. But it's also distracting to concentrate on the bottom half of the screen," says an industry insider.

A growing trend?

The trend could have caught on because English film channels such as Star Movies and HBO have now started running subtitles for every programme they air. Warner Bros noticed that Indian audiences find heavily-accented English dialects too complicated. Their first subtitled movie was Sherlock Holmes, followed by Invictus and now Inception, and they say that the audience response to it has been positive. "It's about an entire experience, and missing out on dialogues wrecks it," said Denzel Diaz, deputy managing director, theatrical, Warner Bros.

But the company will screen subtitled prints only in select cinemas, and let the audience make the decision of where to watch it. "About 85 per cent of our audience felt we should run subtitles, so we're going to have them in every film starting Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows," Diaz added. Their upcoming films such as Cats And Dogs 2 and Legends Of The Guardian will be released both with and without subtitles. "We take into account whether the audience will understand what's being spoken, more than the genre of the film," Diaz said.

Movie-buff Sukhwant Basra feels subtitles ruin the action on screen. He says, "They tell you what the actor says even before he actually says it. And then you just can't concentrate on what's happening."

Mayank Shekhar's Review: Lamhaa

lamhaaposter.jpg

By Hindustan Times

Director: Rahul Dholakia
Actors: Sanjay Dutt, Biapasha Basu, Kunal Kapoor
Rating: **

The dialogue writer of this film is weirdly inclined towards banal repetitions. Among words he chooses to drill in to his audience’s ears again and again – “Operation ’89”, “Kashmir, the most dangerous place on earth”, “Is this a political gimmick?”…. – “Kashmir ek bahut badi company hai” (Kashmir’s a huge company) seems a perennial favourite.

It refers of course to the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir (either side of the line of control) as a thriving ‘industry’, where interested parties from all corners tend to profit from its eternal flame.

How green is this valley, the film argues, can be gauged from the sheer number of vested interests involved, besides local and international politics, and the military-industrial complex located both in New Delhi and Islamabad.

The situation is overwhelming for sure. The film appears even more overwhelmed. It's not easy to make sense of Kashmir. It's harder still then to make sense of this film.

The movie rightly traces the origins of ‘cross-border terrorism’ to 1989, when the American sponsored Mujahideens were high on confidence, with Russia’s defeat in Afghanistan. They flirted with an aggressive move eastward. Kashmir’s little children were recruited to fight in the name of God: “Agla jhumma Pindi mein (“Next Friday prayers in Rawalpindi,)” they cried to moving cameras. Certainly, General Zia’s radicalised regime in Pakistan, fat on Saudi cash, could take care of the accounts. Indian state’s own excesses in Kashmir would have contributed to the Valley’s anger.

The pitch now is queered further still. Lashkar-e-Taiba (Army of the good) is the leading voice of militancy: “Aai aai Lashkar aai, Bharat teri maut aai” (“Lashkar’s come. So has India’s death.”). Such are the loud words of the street, though years of fighting fatigue have made peace a positive option as well.

State election is on its way. A crack commando from Indian military intelligence (Sanjay Dutt) walks in to the Valley with pre-knowledge of a conspiracy “bigger than’89”. What worse could happen to a region burning anyway is hard to tell.

The brooding MI operative shadows a female fidayeen (Bipasha Basu). Her political boss (Anupam Kher) has had 17 attempts on his life. The last one was a bomb blast the commando investigates, posing as a journalist. He even steals documents from the state police, revealing wheels over wheels within the nation’s security ring itself. Local politics is divided over participation in the elections. A young reconciliatory leader (Kunal Kapoor; quietly convincing) chooses to. His former mentors disapprove.

Dutt, the ‘MI 1’, keeps a lone, private eye over all: old leaders (Mahesh Manjrekar), key informants (tailor, scribe etc). The camera simultaneously touches upon the issue of over 10,000 missing young in Kashmir; Pandits who turned refugees in their own country; frustrated Indian soldiers who make Rs 8,000 a month, buy their own uniforms, long for freedom… The film, in its movements and background score, adopts a tone of serious urgency. Neither however can conceal the nothingness, or immeasurable vastness (take your pick) within.

Over-research is an issue: over-reach, an obvious outcome. An aspiration to make that literal, major statement remains ever the movie bitch.

The film’s crackling, shaky shooting style, perhaps for the backdrop, reminds you immediately of Michael Winterbottom’s A Mighty Heart (2007). That phenomenal narrative was so strong on a singular plot that while you knew its subject Daniel Pearl -- the abducted Wall Street Journal reporter -- was no more; you almost believed he could come back.

It seems here, they figured the scattered footage or grand theme first; chose to post a hollow plot around it after. Sometimes the sheer authenticity of a location makes movies worth the trip. This brave effort, shot largely in Kashmir, is certainly no exception on that front. But that’s hardly a reason to recommend a full-length feature. Really.

Priyanka Chopra Face your fears

priyankachopra-2.jpg

By Hindustan Times

New Delhi, July 16 -- The universe that we exist in, quite often acts in mysterious ways, swirling things and around and then quite suddenly placing you in a position and time that is a bolt out of the blue.

Many things in my life have quite literally just 'happened' to me...opportunities that have appeared in my journey of life, egging me on to try something new and push the limits of what I set as boundaries for myself. Miss India, Miss World and then films... they were situations that were far removed from my everyday reality but they were surprisingly presented to me to make of it what I could.

I was reminded of this earlier this week as I made my way to the launch of Sonal Kalra's book A Calmer You. Sonal is the Editor of HT City and my very first meeting with her was when she 'calmly' asked me to write a weekly column for this paper.

My instant response... "Are you insane?" Her calm response to that... "I think you can do it" and so I said... why not... and here I am 62 weeks later and still going strong. So, I was very happy and honoured to have been there to launch the book in Mumbai.

In the same vein, I feel my life is like a series of Fear Factor... the universe throws you a set of challenges...you either overcome your fears and take it on or you back off and live with the regret that you did not even try. There will be success and there will be failure... but that's what makes life so interesting, exciting and oh-so-spicy. To give you an example of what I mean... the universe kept me in isolation for 2 months, brought me back home and threw me into a whirlwind of films, promotions, photo-shoots et al. It was a shock to my system but I took it on and here I am a few days later, smiling and excited that I had such an amazing time.

Inside Julia's vanity van: Simple and ethnic Indian

juliaroberts1.jpg

By Radhika Bhirani and Ruchika Kher

Pataudi (Haryana), Oct 10 (IANS) Hollywood actress Julia Roberts' love for simplicity and appreciation of Indian craft were more than evident inside her personal vanity van as she shot here for the movie "Eat, Pray, Love".

Even as the Pretty Woman spent her last day in India Friday, her white air-conditioned vanity van told a story of its own.

With two rooms and a washroom, it had sparkling black flooring and her character Elizabeth Gilbert's name pasted on the door, as witnessed by these IANS correspondents.

Colourful pillows with traditional Gujarati embroidery and mirror work adorned her van, a sneak peek revealed. The white, blue and yellow pillows added an ethnic touch and were placed on a sofa-like couch.

One could also spot a baby chair for her children - four-and-a-half-year-old twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, and two-year-old son Henry - and a TV set for her entertainment inside the first room.

"Julia's van had a bed inside the second room for her to lie down during breaks," a source from the production team told IANS.

"But most of the time, she either rested in the room allotted to her inside the (Hari Mandir) Ashram or went back to Pataudi Palace if she had longer breaks to catch up with her children."

In total, there were nine vanity vans for the "important members" of the cast and crew parked inside the Hari Mandir Ashram premises, said the source. There was also one separate makeup van and two mobile toilets parked for the convenience of the film unit.

A shed was especially made near the vanity vans where two huge ironing boards were placed to take care of the costumes.

The Oscar winner had been staying at Pataudi Palace, 40 km away from the Indira Gandhi International Airport, with her three kids and their nannies since Sep 17.

Pataudi Palace, which belongs to the erstwhile prince of Pataudi and former India cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, was converted into a heritage hotel after being acquired by the Neemrana Group of Hotels, which is reputed for restoring and managing heritage hotels.

The 41-year-old was here to shoot the India scenes of "Eat, Pray, Love" with her Hollywood colleagues Billy Crudup, Javier Bardem and Richard Jenkins under director Ryan Murphy's direction.

Based on author Elizabeth Gilbert's memoirs, "Eat, Love, Pray" features Roberts as Gilbert who travels to Italy, India and Indonesia in search of peace. The India part of the film was shot at the Ashram, the local market here and Mirzapur village, which is about eight kilometres from here.

Thursday is believed to have been her last day of shooting in India and sources said she left the country Friday.

Now she will shoot in Indonesia for the last leg of the movie. The shooting will be wrapped up in November. The film is expected to be released in 2011, she said.

Indian photographer denies affair with Lindsay Lohan

lindsaylohan1.jpg

By Hindustan Times

Mumbai, July 7 -- Her smouldering photoshoot with Lindsay Lohan was splashed across tabloids, with reports stating that India-born fashion photographer, Indrani Pal-Chaudhuri, is LiLo's latest lover.

Speaking on the issue for the first time, Chaudhuri, over the phone from New York, says, "They were completely distorted reports. We are really good friends and we have been doing photoshoots together for a long time. People are only interested in scandals. We grew tired of answering the same question. It was a silly story."

Chaudhuri, who has been doing social work in Kolkata for 16 years, says it's ironic that this is what it took for people in India to notice her. "My father had to give interviews; it was surprising and funny. We worked so hard, set up a school for 300 children.... This shows the world we live in," she says.

Talking about the controversial shoot, she says that it was "very sexy and was interesting doing it with LiLo". She insists the rumours didn't cause any rift: "We talked. She knows people write what they want and asked me not to take it seriously."

5 steps to being a choreographer Sandip Soparrkar

sandipsoparrkar.jpg

By Hindustan Times

Mumbai, July 17 -- Sandip Soparrkar, who teaches Latin American and Ballroom Dance styles has choreographed for films like Kites, Zubeida, Tum, Kyon Ho Gaya Na, 1857 - The Rising, The Myth and Holiday. He's currently seen with choreographer director Farah Khan on the Zee TV dance reality show for kids called Dance India Dance Li'l Masters. Here are his tips to becoming a choreographer:

1. Learn any one dance form completely. There's no point becoming a jack-of-all-trades and a master of none. If you learn a particular style of dance thoroughly, you create a strong base for yourself. Touching upon other styles as and when needed enhances your knowledge. Specialising is very essential.

2. Understand the song you're choreographing, thoroughly. As a part of that, you must tap its mood, beats and the attitude. Without understanding this, you cannot set up a great performance.

3. Set the dance with an assistant first and pay attention to the moves. You'll know which steps work and which don't. You'll also know which steps can make an artiste uncomfortable on the dance floor. Essentially, steps should be set keeping the performing artiste in mind. By looking at your assistant, if you feel that the artiste will find a certain set of moves difficult, change them, immediately.

4. Be true to your art and your work. Don't play dirty with others. Treat your teammates and co-workers really well because if they are happy, they will also be dedicated and will help you come up with better creations than your competitors.

5. Once you have succeeded by following the above mantras, try not to let the success trickle into your head. That's when the fall begins. Remember, a dancer grooves on the ground and not with his feet in the air.

Fashion forward for Bollywood with Aisha

sonamkapoor2.jpg

By Shilpa Raina

New Delhi, July 15 (IANS) Remember the Hollywood movies where you drool as much over the clothes and styling as over the plot? Now comes an Indian movie that promises to give glimpses of high street fashion in India and set a benchmark for Bollywood.

The film "Aisha" will see actress Sonam Kapoor embrace dresses that are soft and flowery, including a nude tulle flowery one with a bow and small pearls.

The woman behind this pretty wardrobe is Dubai-based designer Ayesha Depala.

"(In the film) Aisha Kapoor is a girl from Delhi. She loves her clothes and animals. She is very feminine and fashion forward. I could very much relate to her in the movie because she is quintessentially like my brand in many ways," Depala told IANS in an e-mail interview.

"My clothes are subtle and reflect the wearer's personal sense of style. Even a fully beaded couture piece will never be extremely embellished nor extremely revealing.

"A woman's sex appeal lies in her confidence and the clout she has from wearing her outfit as opposed to baring all."

Promos of "Aisha", produced by Anil Kapoor's daughter Rhea, are looking very stylish. All the female leads are looking chic and sophisticated. The effort that has gone into the clothes may remind the audiences of glamorous-looking movies like "Devil Wears Prada", "Priceless" and "Sex and the City".

If you log on to the official website of "Aisha", you will see Sonam sitting comfortably on a red couch wearing a nude tulle ruffled gown by Depala. She has also created little dresses that are soft and flowery. One of these is a nude lace shift with a racer back design and another nude tulle flowery dress with a bow and small pearls.

Though the entire look of "Aisha" has been designed by stylist Pernia Qureshi, who with the help of other designers has successfully given a feel of freshness to the movie, Depala was in charge of Sonam's wardrobe.

Depala met Sonam during the Dubai International Film Festival and they clicked on a personal level.

"Sonam and I clicked instantaneously. She liked my work and we talked about dressing her for the red carpet appearances. We chatted for a long time, which helped me a lot to know her personally," said Depala.

"It was long before 'Aisha' happened. One day I got a call from her sister Rhea and she asked me if I would be interested to design for her. So that's how I got this project," she added.

So how did she manage to sketch out dresses from such a distance?

"Rhea sent me the script and this helped me know Aisha better. We sent them a few ready-to-wear looks, which they selected and also, I did design a few dresses especially for her with Pernia's guidance," she added.

This is not the first time Depala is dressing a Bollywood celebrity; her dresses have been worn by Lara Dutta and Shilpa Shetty as well.

Her career began in 2002, when she launched her signature line - Ayesha Depala - under which she presents both ready-to-wear and couture.

The designer, who holds a degree in interior designing from Delhi, shifted to Dubai after marriage. After gaining a foothold in the Middle East, Depala is now aiming for the Indian market as well.

Apart from designing for "Aisha", she will take part in the HDIL-India Couture Week in Mumbai later this year for more visibility.

Priyanka Chopra off to Phuket for 28th birthday

priyankachopra7.jpg

New Delhi, July 17 (IANS) Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra, who has been busy shooting for her forthcoming films "Anjaana Anjaani" and "Saat Khoon Maaf", has chalked out time to celebrate her 28th birthday in Phuket, an island in the south of Thailand.

"Priyanka has gone to Phuket with six of her friends... all girls! She will celebrate her birthday there... her schedule was planned to make sure she got the time off," a source close to the actress told IANS.

Though Priyanka didn't reveal where she is heading for her sojourn, she posted on micro-blogging site Twitter: "Off for my sinful holiday with my girls! Oh sooooo needed it... See you guys in paradise."

The actress, who turns 28 Sunday, is expected to be back in Mumbai July 27.

Priyanka, who won the Miss World title in 2000, made her Bollywood debut with "The Hero: Love Story of a Spy" in 2003, after which she featured in "Andaaz".

In 2004, she received critical acclaim for her performance in "Aitraaz" and later did commercial films like "Mujhse Shaadi Karogi", "Bluffmaster", "Krrish", "Don - The Chase Begins Again", and "Salaam-E-Ishq".

It was Madhur Bhandarkar's "Fashion" that brought her into the league of top-rated actresses in Bollywood, and even won her a National Award.

There has been no looking back for her ever since.

She was seen in commercial hits like "Dostana" and "Kaminey" and also featured in films like "What’s Your Rashee", and "Pyaar Impossible", which didn’t fare too well at the box office. Nevertheless, she has films like "Anjaana Anjaani", Vishal Bharadwaj’s "Saat Khoon Maaf" and "Don 2 - The Chase Continues" in her kitty this year.
